Match Report - 350 words - Adelaide vs Melbourne

*As part of my journalism course we’re often tasked with doing a match report within 20 minutes of the game finishing. We’re always told to cover football for this type of report. However, as everyone should know, I’m a cricket nut, so thought I’d cover the cricket. Although, I’d prefer to write about Test match cricket. Writing a match report will be easier and more consistent on the Big Bash League over the next month.

This is the first of three posts. First, I'll post a short match report that would be published immediately after the event. Secondly, I’ll post an opinion piece on the match that I would have more time to build a story of the match. Finally, I’ll post how I recorded the match and went about writing it.*

Tim Ludeman smashed the fastest fifty in BBL history in guiding the Adelaide Strikers to a 8 wicket win over Melbourne Stars.

Ludeman hit 5 sixes and 9 fours in his 92 not out(44b) as the un-fancied Strikers strolled to victory.

The build-up was centred around the appearance of Kevin Pietersen in the Stars line-up and he didn’t disappoint.

Pietersen played switch hits and monstrous pull-shots on his way to a team-best 66 off 46 balls with four sixes and even had time to joke with commentators Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist.

Asked to explain one of sixes, Pietersen replied using his on-field mic “You’re paid to do this, you guys come up with something”.

In addition to the mic, Pietersen was wearing a helmet cam as viewers watched him hook his second ball over fine-leg evoking Ashes 2005 memories for the Australian crowd.

Fellow Englishman Luke Wright scored 46(37b) at the top of the order. In fact, the Englishmen combined to score 111 of the Melbourne runs.

No other Melbourne batsman reached double figures as regular wickets damaged their chances.

Melbourne will be hoping the likes of Cameron White (6), Glenn Maxwell (7) and David Hussey (8) will score considerably more and provide support for the two free-scoring English batsmen.

148 wasn’t a substantial total yet Melbourne would have thought they could defend the total against a weak looking Adelaide batting line-up.

Those hopes vanished by the end of the 3rd over as left-arm spinner Clive Rose disappeared for 23 thanks to Ludeman’s incredible hitting.

The runs never ceased as Craig Simmons – who moved from champions Perth – blazed 30(15b) in an opening partnership of 85 in just 5.2 overs.

Adelaide reached 129-1 in ten overs. Nearly double the 67-1 total Melbourne managed after ten overs.

Adelaide finished the job with 7.3 overs left despite Travis Head cutting to Pietersen at point for 22(15b) with just one run needed.

Melbourne will be left licking their wounds after a humiliating defeat.

The Stars most economical bowler? Michael Beer at 8 runs per over.

Adelaide will likely be celebrating with a similar number of beers after that victory.
